I made a post about different fabrics that I tried for my prototype. I have decided on using “stretch conductive fabric”. Reasons why I chose it are, my first simple test for galvanic skin response with ”stretch conductive fabric” gave good results, also it is description says that it is a really good conductive material and good for electrodes.

So, I attached two pieces of fabric on a wristband, and I used a lilypad and 300k as resistor.

And this is another image to show how my data represented for now, and how it changes…

Here are 2 videos from my prototype. One with using fingers, one with using wrist. I was taking rapid breaths while I am experimenting to see the change in graph. When I take rapid breaths graph goes up, when ever I give all of my breath out, graph goes down.

Yesterday, I found this project. It is very cool and very close to my idea. I didn’t have chance to read the book yet. However, if you are interested in, here some brief explanations and links to them

http://emotionalcartography.net/
“Emotional Cartography is a collection of essays from artists,
designers, psychogeographers,
cultural researchers, futurologists and neuroscientists, brought
together by Christian Nold, to
explore the political, social and cultural implications of visualising
intimate biometric data and
emotional experiences using technology.”

And this is the link for the same project that maps feeling on the
geographical maps of the cities.
http://www.biomapping.net/
“Bio Mapping is revolutionary methodology and tool for visualising
people’s reactions to the external world.
When we become aware of our own and each others unique body reactions
to the environment we can create a better world!”

I have presented my thesis idea few times. There were some questions that I got from my audience. Here are my answers to make them clear.

I will be measuring changes in body during the day, and I will be correlating this with emotional changes. I can not estimate exact emotion, but I can say, calm, normal, anxious/stresses/anger/happy(these four are almost the same data, because Galvanic Skin Response shows change in your bodies resistance according to amount of sweating)

Problem

I realized, there are sometimes that I cannot control changes in my emotions and loose my temper. After realizing this, I start controlling myself. Whenever I realize there is a change in my emotion, I try to calm down and thing about it again. This helps me to realize if I am doing something wrong or right. So, as a start I see this thing as a screen for myself to realize my feelings and control them. As a start, I am doing this project for myself.

Later on I have different ideas to implement by using the same idea. For example, knowing what effects me in New York, or a driver feelings screen or a genre visualizer.

Sensors

I will be using galvanic skin response to see reactions of your body. You can figure out emotional changes by looking at to resistance between two points on the body. This is effected by the level of sweating.

Also, I want to use heart rate monitor, because seeing changes in the heart rate might be useful or, it might help me to figure out if the changes in galvanic skin response is because of a physical activity.

I will not be using EEG, because EEG interferes with galvanic skin response and even a little movement can effect EEG data. I am designing this product for people to wear in their daily life. So, they will be moving.

Display

I will be using some sort of abstract shapes. Using hight or graphical elements doesn’t seem so well. I am sensing if there is any change in the emotions, not exactly what you are feeling, and also cumulative data. So, using color code seems easy and meaningful for now. Or another option can be using abstract shapes like, if shape has sharp edges that means danger etc.

Private/public

If you don’t want to make this data public (let’s say you are in a grocery store), you can turn it off or unattached the screen. Another option might be having a headphone system, so, you can hear it but people cannot. So, you will be still aware of it and have a chance to change it.

Other possible scenarios

Maybe, some sort of screen for traffic. This can be for personal awareness or for public awareness.

Mapping emotional changes during a movie and instead of calling a genre for the movie calling something related to graphics or colors.

According to wikipedia, Electroencephalography (EEG) is the recording of electrical activity along the scalp produced by the firing of neurons within the brain. Basically, for EEG, you are looking for electrical activity of your brain by using electrodes. Brainwaves have very low frequency. There are some good projects for EEG like “Open EEG” or “Emotive”. However, I don’t know how easy and reliable it is.

Also, even a simple eye blinking is interfering with EEG values, for my project, I will be tracking people who are moving. So, there will a lot of inference.

I was talking with another ITP student (Neil Hickey), he worked on EEG before for his undergrad. I mentioned him that I will be using galvanic skin response with EEG. He mentioned that, galvanic skin response (GSR) would interfere with EEG also.

As a result, I will not be using EEG for my thesis, because my audience will be moving and I will be using GSR which are interfering with EEG.

Here are some images from my prototype that I made earlier..

This is a project that we made for Design For Unicef class in Fall 2009. I have worked with Jorge Just, Karla Calderon, Rune Madsen and Dharmarajan Ayakkad.

Aim of this project it to make “Family Tracing and Reunification” faster. Most of the cases that we saw, they are using paper forms that makes everything so slow. So, we offered them to use a mobile interface to do all the recording and searching. Also, this will give them a good database, that they can also use for automated matching.

After Haiti earthquake, they caught few people trying to kidnap children from Haiti. This incident, made the development process faster. We found some volunteer developers in ThoughtWorks to work on this application, and made it open source. We are using Ruby on Rails for development.

Our first prototype is for web, and then we developed an application for BlackBerry, because BlackBerry is one of the most popular phones in the field. We are willing to develop one for Android also.

For more information about the project or if you want to involve in this, please visit www.rapidftr.com

This weeks assignment was to do some interactive show on TV (which is our web browser). Users can interact with the show by using their web browser. I worked with Sherron Hanson and Baowen Huang

We made a dreams teller program. We used flash media server to create a channel on our own web site. Then we used some ajax code to create a chat server. So, when people login to our site, they were seeing our live dreams teller show (Ms. Dreamz) and were chatting with her and asking questions by using a chat window. On top of the camera view, we displayed the name of the user and the question while Ms. Dreamz were answering it.

I think, it went pretty well. Other dream teller shows that I saw were mostly based on phone interaction. People were calling and asking about their dreams. Our version has a chat window. So, people can ask questions to Ms. Dreamz or they can discuss and talk with others by using the chat window.

We were missing some details, like we need someone to tell Ms. Dreamz that we are “on Air” now, because she was waiting a sign from us to start. It would be good if she starts telling something and welcomes people. It is good give people few minutes to start chatting, because they are waiting to see what is going on and when they understand it, they join to the show. Also, we need someone to mange our contend that we display on top of the screen and someone to give some clues about dreams to Ms. Dreamz.

On Thursday, I saw a tweet from MIT Media Labs with a link to iCalm. When I watched it, I realized it is very similar to my idea. However it is not exactly the same. Actually, it made me happy, cause I realize that this thing could become important in the near future.
Here is the link for iCalm : <a href="http://www.media.mit.edu/news/videos/2010/02/labcast-46-icalm

There is a video on the link. It seems a little fake now, but promising.

This project is also changing my ideas about my sensors. They are using galvanic skin response, and that totally make sense to me. Also, I am realizing how hard it is to get some good data from EEG and give it a meaning.

Today we discussed about our ideas during the class. We red each others concept description papers and try to explain it to class and draw an image of it. Lee-Sean worked on my paper. His image was very clear and similar to my idea. He gave good inputs like, I have to tell that I am doing a hoodie in the beginning and also he described my images on hoodie as “abstract”

This week I received all my orders. I have a lot of fabrics that I need to test. But more exciting than that, I received my Textronics development kit. Kit includes small fabrics that has fabric electrodes on them. Looks very promising. I guess that will be the base of my thesis project.

Also I will be adding a audio jack to hat that I made for electrodes. Tom Igoe gave me that idea. It looks like my circuit is ok but maybe my signal processing might have issues. So he told me try to use audio input.

Also after talking with Tom Igoe, I decided to make a simple IProcessing sketch that can log my mood with time stamps. However, I couldn’t find any samples of IProcessing – database connection (they just released the IProcessing, so thats normal). However I just made a simple HTML-PHP and text file connection so I can log my mood data with time, and location very easily on my IPhone.

This is how my log file looks like. It seems pretty simple and good enough for my approach.

Morning of the first day was a simple introduction to workshop and projects. There are some interesting projects. All of them is using the facade of the building and most of them depends on the interaction with camera (motion detection)

I am not sure which project I will be working on. I was thinking about “Dreamworks”. However they couldn’t come because of some health issues. I am kind of in between “Stan by Me” and “Mimodek”

Stand by Me, is a project that visualize plants on the facade of the building and user can interact with it by using web, mobile phones or a physical device. It requires active interaction. Alfredo (idea owner of the project) doesn’t want passive interaction with camera because he thinks that plants need some action to live and he wants to give that sense to people

Mimodek, seems interesting. They need simple motion detection which can be easily done by using. They want to track moving objects and distance between them. Then visualize it by using natural behaviours.

Also, last night Casey Reas, made a presentation about his latest works. He talked about how he develops his algorithms and not mimicking the nature. He said that when he start a project, he first writes stories and then formulate them by using “elements” and “behaviors”. Then he starts programing. He has set of rules that he implements on his projects and makes new iterations of it.

Another speaker of the first day was Victor Vina. It was a really interesting lecture. He basically showed us many projects all around the world and told us how important to be a “craft man”. Also, he mentioned that craft man focuses on small details that no one can notice and learns by experimenting in years. He has realy good ideas about simple interaction design and he understand human behaviors. His talk was really inspiring to me and reminded me things that I am missing about my thesis.

That was pretty much it for the first day.

My first toy is a development kit for electrodes.

I am very curious about this kit. It seems really promising. Adidas just bought the company which develops them, but they are still selling their kit through Adidas. I hope I will get it soon.

Silver Mesh Fabric

When you need the conductivity and shielding performance of Silver with the strength of Nylon, ArgenMesh is the material to choose. At >60 dB from 10 MHz to 40 GHz and surface conductivity of <0.5 Ohm per square this material is great for high level grounding, static discharge, electric field shielding, and radiofrequency shielding. Safe for skin contact, it can be used in garments, or bedding. Also an excellent curtain or wall covering. 55% Silver, 45% Nylon. Silver color, some light penetration. 59 inch wide. (http://www.lessemf.com/fabric.html)

This is our first project for Live Experimental Interactive TV. We tried to do some live mash-up video. Our audience are texting some samples of the lyrics to our system and we display it on the video with audio. I worked with Edward Gordon(Gordie), Adam Harvey and Jeff Howard for this project.

System has 3 different parts. First part is the TextMarks system and php code. User sends a text to TextMarks and php code saves it in a text file. Then, there is a processing application keeps checking the the text messages that user send and matches them with the ones in the song. Processing checks the text file in every half second. Then, processing application sends the keyword to Max/Msp by using OSC. Then in Max/Msp we have a video that skips to marked keyword points audio, that matches with video and also an audio part that plays under the video.

I think our work was creative and fun to play. Also it worked so well. I think some additions could be, not using a song but some other mesh-up thing that is not related to time. Also, maybe some more reflection of the user on the video would be useful.

I have been working on different types of gesture based interaction for a while. I tried cameras, buttons, range finders, bending angles etc. After having carpal tunnel syndrome on my right hand, I start reading a lot about gestural interfaces. It is really challenging to force cave men to use high tech. devices, because it is not in our nature. Because of the changes in our “tools” our body starts adopting itself to new tool.

For my thesis, I am planing to identify physiological reactions to technology. There are many things that we can research about in our body. So, I believe that some of the combinations might lead us to a better interaction.

I think best and most dangerous way to interact with devices is to use brain waves. I tried to made something called ‘what’s on your mind” last semester. It was a social network control device by using EEG data. It is really hard to calibrate EEg data for this purpose and also it is hard to see if it is a reliable data. So, that’s why I will be focusing on more reliable data.

One another reason that I am doing my thesis on this topic is, for me, inside the body and interaction is an unknown. So, I believe that exploring unconscious interaction will be meaningful.

Also, according to my findings, other way that I can go through is a t-shirt that displays your reactions to things around you. I think reason behind it, is a need of expressing myself. I like having short conversations, talking to the point. Sometimes, people are having problems to understand how my mind works. So, this might be a good device for me to get over these issues.

I believe that, in our body there are lot’s of things that we can discover for a better interaction with humans or machines. I am hoping to discover some of them through this semester.

For my thesis I will be focusing on trying to find ways to “awareness-free monitoring” of human body. I will be exploring different types of fabric based sensors on garments. At the end, I want to find out human bodies reactions to different types of environments or events. At the end, I want to find distinct differences under different conditions and display it by using a garment or creating an unconscious interaction.

I have started my research process by looking at some sample products that I can use for my project. I figured out that there are some research on this area. Also, there are some products that does the tracking al ready. Problem is, most of them are still research projects. So, it is really hard to buy them.

I have been tracking my activities while I am sleeping in last 2 weeks. I am using 2 different application/product for now. I tried an Iphone application called Cycle Time, which detects movements while you are sleeping, and maps it to different stage of sleep. At the same time, I am using a product called My Zeo. It is a fabric based EEG sensor that talks with a clock to map your sleeping data. These to applications results are not matching each other. So, I think it is hard to get sleeping stage through motion detecting.

That experiment showed me, there is a way to use fabrics to get accurate data, but still it needs to be touching to the body.

After my little experiment, I start looking at “fabric based electrodes”. I found some really good papers, that explains, their setups, some algorithm and problems that they faced to. So, next few days, I will keep reading papers that I found, and try to learn from what people have found out. At the same time, I will be looking for the fabrics that they used, and I need to order some of them to start testing out.

After I find useful fabrics, I will be working on positioning of the fabrics. Because, positioning and getting reliable data are correlated to each other.

After I find the locations to attach my sensors, I will start building a garment will test it under different conditions, like how our body reacts to people that we see or environments that we are in. I will be logging data and visualizing them till I find a meaning in it. I am planing to display those findings on a garment by using OLED screens.

Also, at the same time, I will be masking some user testing on computer interaction. I am planing to make people interact with computers, and watch their bodies reactions. If I can find a correlation between them, I might start working on a computer interaction system.

To sum up, I will be researching for sensors to use, ways to visualize them, and according to meaning that I get from it, I will be finishing my development process.

This weeks assignment was to watch a live show and think about possible interactions.

As I said in the class, I don’t have a television as machine or cable t.v. So, I tried to watch things online or in bars.

First thing that I watched was a Turkish late night show, called Media King. During the show they have few guests, mostly actors, writers, musicians etc. and they talk about things that they are doing. Sometimes they get in to some political arguments also. They are mostly well educated people, so it is usually fun to watch it. Also they have a section that they watch some youtube videos or some parts of the shows from t.v. and make fun of the funny parts. One interesting thing about them is, they keep saying t.v. is bad for you and you shouldn’t even watch this program, which is very confusing.

Possible interactions that I can think about, people can choose the videos that they are showing by using a website, people can nominate videos and vote. Also, when guests are discussing stuff, people can join them by using chat. However, I believe that that would kill all the specialties of making a show. Also, they usually have 6 guest and lost of people in studio. So, maybe different camera options that are given to user can be helpful.

I also watched an NBA game between NY Knicks and LA Lakers, on Friday night. I guess there is a lot to do with cameras and graphics for sports events. I guess having control on camera is a big thing. Also, visualization of data is really helpful. I think, if user can chose data to visualize or compare in some given options and choose the visualization type, can be really helpful. Having reply option is a big thing also.

These are my first explorations about interactive t.v.’s. I guess these are very simple things, but most of them still the things that we don’t have.

When I was in Turkey last month, I gave a talk in University of Economics, Izmir, about what is Interaction Design Good For?.

It was mostly about production classes in ITP, and things that I have been doing in here. They asked me to do something for lst year students. Last year students are about to start their final projects and their teachers wants them to be creative, and productive. Also, they want them to do something useful.

I think it was really helpful. Also, that was my first official talk in a college.

Bed Data project is something that we had been thinking about. I think we come up with the idea in summer 2009. Idea of visualizing sleep and sex sounds fun.

During summer we start building our force sensors. We were thinking about using 96 FSRs. That was so expensive so we build our own. Also we prepared a very nice documentation for DIY FSR (http://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-FSR-sandwich/)

Then next step was setting up a multiplexer shield. Our first iteration, we made a nice multiplexer shield for Arduino. It seems very cool.

However, we had some issues with multiplexers, then we decided to stick with breadboard.

Breadboard with multiplexer

For analog multiplexers (CD 4067) Tom Igoe has really good documentation on ITP physical computing page. Also,, I am planing to make an instructable for using multiple analog multiplexers.

Then we connected our sensors. We used ribbon cables (8wires) and terminals. So, we connected our sensors to terminals and terminal are connected to ribbon cables and they are connected to multiplexers. I think this is very modular setup and helped us a lot.

Then we tried to program our sensors. We are reading all the values by using Arduino Duemilanove. Then we are sending everything to processing. We have 3 different setup after this.

My program

I got all the sensor values, and but all the sensor into an order. First, I ran 20 loops to average sensor values. That helped me to remove the noise from sensors. In my code, for each run, I was looking at difference between this average value and sensor value and getting their difference according to a threshold. So, I had precise values.

Sensor values are changing their rectangular visuals color, white to black. Then I blur the image and and re size it.This helped me to map sensor values to pixels. Then I run blob tracking.

my blobs

Diego Rioja‘s program

He visualized each sensor as circles, circles are getting larger or smaller according to sensor values.

Diegos Circles

Matt Richard’s Snake Game

Matt joined us in last minute. After talking with him for few hours, we decided to make a snake game. User need to roll his/her body up and down, left and right in the bed, to control the snake game. We projected the game to the ceiling, so user can watch it when he/she is laying down.

Matts game

In year 2020 people will be very different then they are now. First of all, human body and brain will change a lot. Because of the change in our daily life, our bodies will get use to it, and have some sort of mutation. Also, our brains will be effected by radiation and effect of smart devices in our life.

When I am imagining a technological human in year 2020, what I imagine is, no wires, less physical devices. I think one of the biggest change will be about power source for our technological devices. Scientists are looking for ways to produce electricity or deliver electricity in different ways. I think one of the interesting one is using radio frequency waves of our phones. This would help us to get rid of wires hanging all around our devices.
wireless electricity with cellphones

Another big improvement, will be on physical appearance of devices. First of all we will not need to carry tons of devices all the time. Phone, computer, camera will become one device and it will be a small device in our pockets, that has a connection to a screen in our contact lenses. So, screens will be inside of lenses, camera will be outside. We can see images, definitions right in front of our eyes. Way we control devices will change, eye movements, brain waves, body temperature etc. will be the ways that we interact with devices. Also, this might effect the communication ways between humans in future.

Also another interesting thing will be technology which is open to public. I believe that in the future there will be cameras all around the cities (CCTV), so people can connect them and take pictures. They will be all controlled over the web and all they need to do is, using their smart devices and taking pictures. If governments are still alive, this technology might decrease the crime rate (cause some body. literally watching you all the time). Also, I am assuming that there will be no wifi hot spot needs, cause gsm+wifi will be one piece and they will be all around.

Another possibility is, watching everything from an outside source, which means, instead of CCTV cameras, we might use cameras from satellites. Those cameras will have very high resolution so, we can zoom in take picture and zoom in again see every detail. We’ll have ability to control those devices by using small screens in our eyes.

This weeks assignment is to go to Tenement Museum in LES. This is an interesting museum, because you need to join one of the tours. It is great because you hear stories about the place, so you don’t need to read any boring writings.

We took an early tour in the morning with Eyal, Juri and Liesje about Moore family. Moore family is an Irish family, one of the immigrant families who lived in that building. There are so many interesting stories about the place. Mostly they focus on water and cleaning. It’s because their basic problem was health which caused by cleaning. One of the interesting things that I learned was LES has the first sewage system in New York.

There are so many stories about the house, seems like there were a lot of families in that building during the time. Walls ceilings, floors are so great. I couldn’t stop myself to keep looking at them. I think they all tells a story, especially the wall papers. Tour guide told that, they found almost 25(?not sure about the number now but it was a lot) different layers of wall papers, means that 25 different stories, life’s, families and tastes.

They are using projection and sound to give a sense of those times, which is really interesting. They are using windows to project in a really old room. I think it was great.

Also they don’t have enough lights in the building, I think that also gives a sense of their life’s. I think keeping it old, not using a lot of technology really works for their purposes.

An Immigrant

“I think I am really lucky that I am not an immigrant like them. Yes, I have some hard times, but at least I have a clean place to live. Well seems like some things are not changed to much, but at least it is not that bad. Look at this apartment, how can you leave in this place with 4 other people and with out water. That’s imposible…”

A Kid

“What is this place dad? Why are the rooms so small? Who is living in here? Why does it a museum? I can’t see anything interesting… Why didn’t they have water? Was New York a bad place dad?…”(I was like this when I was a little kid, if I don’t get why, I would keep asking questions to my father till I drive him crazy)

An Irish American

“I am so thankful to my grandparents. I don’t have to deal with all these stuff now. They had really hard times, but we made it, now me and my family have a great life. I guess, I they can see us, they would be really happy. I think that was the reason that they moved in here, to make us happy….”

4th weeks assignment was to visit AMNH. This was not my first time there. First of all it is really hard to find it, because if you search it in Google Maps, it doesn’t shows the real location. I did the same mistake and search it on Google Maps again.

I took the entrance which is in the lower floor. I start with earth and galaxy simulations. It is a really interesting exhibition. I think because of it’s structure (it’s made of metal and white materials) this place seems very clean and modern. Then I went to first floor, and tried to find the Indian American hall. It is almost impossible to find a place inside. Even maps doesn’t really helps.

Luckily I found the hall and start walking around. Room is very dark, and seems very old. I think color of the walls and lights gives you that old and boring feeling. Also, I think it was the emptiest hall in the museum. There are many interesting stuff inside, but it doesn’t take that much attention. Also this hall doesn’t have many thing that most of the other halls have, like screens, projections or at least a speaker. There is no technological interaction and seems like people are looking for that.

Than I start walking around. Animals exhibition is always interesting, cause all the animals are really big, and realistic. Kids spend a lot of time in front of the screens and people loves taking pictures with them. I think the reason is, they can never see most of the animals in there in real life, so they like spending time by just exploring them.

I think the most interesting part is the dinosaurs. They are huge and seems so real (I mean, like the ones that we see in movies). Also might be because of the windows and white color that they used, this floor is really bright. That changes a lot of things.

There are also some nice screens in that exhibition, that shows really interesting stuff about ancestor trees. But one negative thing about them is, that floor is so quite and when ever you start touching on the screen, speakers go on and make a lot of noise. I think headphones or directional speakers might be a good solution.

Two last thing about AMNH, their stores are full of toys, and some interesting stuff, which is really fun to look at. Last thing is, finding bathrooms is as hard as finding halls and seems like there is no easy way to solve that problem.

18 years old tourist boy

“I heard a lot about this museum, lets check it out. $16 for student, isn’t it expensive, anyways I want to see it. I hear about the dinosaurs, I want to check them out first. Wait, this earth exhibition seems interesting. Lets check it out. Nice. Oh, it has been half an hour. I should keep moving. Whats happening in this floor, oh I see different cultures all around the world. Europe, Asia, oh seems like South America has more space. It has been 2 hours, and I couldn’t find the dinosaurs yet. I should keep moving…”

A little kid

“Hey mom, come here look at this bear!!! Are they really this big? Why? Ohh look at those penguins they seem really funny! hahah. What are these? Masks? I didn’t like it, it is not fun. Can we go home? Oh Really? Dinosaurs? Where? Let’s go see them!! They are hugee!! Are they real mom? how do they know they were like this? Did they see dinosaurs?”

A school Teacher

“Alright kids, come here! We need to get in to a line first. Now, let me give you some information about AMNH. We’ll se many different things today, about cultures, animals and dinosaurs. Lets start with Animals. Yes, they look so real. Lets sit down here and watch the animals a little bit. Ok, time to move. What do you guys think about the elephants. They look giant ha? Anyone wants to take picture?”

This weeks assignment is to see one children museum and NY Hall of Science.

I started with Soho Children Museum on Sunday. I think Sunday was a great day to see that museum. There were many children, who are running around or shouting. Seems like, it is a playground not a museum. It was really fun to see them like that. On the walls there are so many pieces that they made and most of them seems really good. Kids were mostly playing with things. I think that’s why they were going crazy, but I believe that it is really good for them.

One of the interesting thing was, there was a green screen wall, which was really fun to play with. Another thing was the signs and the language that they used. There were signs like this “please close me” it sounds really friendly.

I think another important thing is, kids are leaving something there, it can be a drawing or a note, but visitors who came after them sees those things and maybe that might affect them in a good way or when ever they come back, they see their things on the wall, I believe that makes them really happy.

My second stop was NY Hall of Science. It was amazing! I spend two hours inside and didn’t want to leave that place. There were so many things for all ages. It is all hands on learning. Also, there were some ITP style pieces like motion detection or sound pieces. I think technology is playing a really important role in that museum. Also, there were some things that needs multiplayer for interaction, and I believe that, those pieces improves interactivity between kids.

I was trying to play with one of the driving game, and I had a conversation with one of the kids mom. She said, her son was playing this so long, and should let us to drive. I told her to not worry. Her answer was really good, she said that he should also needs to learn sharing. Its clear that people brings their kids there to learn something, but they are not learning by just interacting with machines, they are also learning by interacting people around them.

A Parent in Children museum

” Seems so crowded and loud inside, I hope he is going to have fun. Hey, come play with this. Hahaha is in it fun. Oh, did you see this painting? Wow he is 4 years old, that’s amazing. Lets go to downstairs. Be careful at the stairs. Oh, look at that, there is a fish behind me, this is called green screen….”

A Kid in NY Hall of Science

“Oh my god! I want to play with that spaceship. Hey dad, look at me I am landing to Mars!!! Hey dad! Come here Mars is really cold, come touch it!!!!! Did you see the lines between us, how did it happened? I want to ride this car, do you want to race with me?”

A Grown Up in NY Hall of Science

“That was a long trip, I hope it worth’s. Hmm, am I in right place? Oh I saw their sign. I should keep walking this way. Seems like nobody is inside. Lets check it out. Seems more for kids, hmm lets try this. Wow that is really cool. I want to try this video also, hahaha that was funny. Alright lets push these buttons. Wow I knew I was wrong!! Wow look at that!! that’s me in different colors. I am having so much fun!!”

Magnum Photos web site almost has the same problems. If you click on any links, you’ll see each sub-link has different identity. Also if you click on a picture, it will load the whole page, which makes you wait to load, and also annoys. Also, even their frames changes on each link.

This weeks assignment was to visit 3 cultural museums. Nancy gave us different options. I chose The Asian Society, The Jewish Museum and National Indian American Museum. The reason behind this choice, I want to see different cultures and how they develop their cabinets of wonders.

So I started with The Jewish Museum. The way they design it was so good. It was 4 floors, and everything was in an order. Security was completely douche, but some workers were really nice. Most of the workers were old, so sometimes it is even hard to communicate with them. There is this heavy feeling inside. Music, architecture, colors, lights makes you feel so bad. Especially, I didn’t want to enter to massacre room. It was really sad, and gave me a headache.

Then I went to The Asian Society. It was really small. but exhibition was really good. Most common thing about these two museum, they are small and I think well organized. Signs were enough and bathrooms were clear and not hard to find. However, I think Jewish museum was more cabinets of wonder type and Asian society was more like art museum.

Then I went to National Indian American Museum. As a building it was huge, but as as an exhibition, things that they show was pretty much the same. There was one room, which you are allowed to touch stuff and try to create your things was really good experience. I spend some time in there, playing with stuffs. Both Asian Society and National Indian American museums has great shops, they have really interesting stuffs but a little bit expensive.

Both Jewish and Indian American museums has touch screens, but they are not using it very effective.

As a kid in Nationa Indian American museum

“look mom, can you see these clothes, they are beautiful. Hey what is this room. Oh it is fool of games. Hey mom, did you see that? i did it. What is that button, hmm? ohhh great, look at those lights!!What is this guy making in here? He looks like the ones that I saw on pictures…”

As a researcher in Jewish Museum

“Ohh, I am so glad that I am here. This place is fool of stories. Lets start from the first floor. Seems like more childish. Nice, look at those kids, they are discussing about art pieces with their teachers. Lets go to 3th floor. Look at that, there is a virtual cafe that I can sit down and listen stories about Jews in different places on earth. Lets try to listen their stories…..”

As a Pakistani, who grow up in America, at Asian Society

“I am so happy to see my countries art in New York. Lets check out this big room. Colors look beautiful. Wait a second. Why are those painting are in black? Our culture is more colorful. Oh nice, I like this one, a rug made of pictures. What are those hats, colors looks similar but…. Oh nice she made this hats with gifts that she got. I am so happy to see modern artists from my culture….”

Meanings of the words are related to what they present in minds. A word might mean something really bad to me, but it might mean something good to you. I think we usually see that in our daily life. When we are talking about something, if we are talking with a people that we know, we can refer to things that we have memories. Like when I ask Diego if he is going to party, I ask him, are you going to turn in to a pumpkin or any pumpkin tonight. I am using pumpkin for party, because during the day we are really different then who we are while we are partying. Also, we can see that in ITP+outside world meetings, gatherings. Sometimes we talk in pseudo codes.

However when I am thinking about creating a new language, that seems very challenging. First of all, I need to find a reason to create a language. Lets say you want to go somewhere with your friends but you don’t want to invite someone in that room(So, I can use pumpkin example).

Pumpkin tonight : Are you going to party tonight?
It is hard to find any pumpkins now : it is late.
I love pumpkins, especially if they are fried : of course, I am going to get wasted
Do you know closest restaurant that I can found any? : what time you want to meet?
There is one famous at 11th and 5t(10th) avenue : lets meet at 11.00(or 11.30).
I see, I’ll search it on google maps : ok, I’ll call you.

This kind of conversations takes attention from the people around you, but they don’t understand anything. You can extend this kind of conversations for different reasons.

I used an electrode and an accelerometer (just x), and wrote my readings to a text file. I am trying to use MYSQL library to put them online.

For this assignment all wee need to hook up some analog sensors and get values from them. I worked wit Asli for this one. I used an accelerometer (x-y) and a piezo. To make it more fun, I put the piezo on my Adams apple and accelerometer to my head and create a game. You need to get as many target as you can get in a minute. It is very simple when you start making sounds, your Adams apple vibrates and piezo gets values, this moves your cursor to right. and if you move your head up and down it moves your cursor down, and if you shake your head it picks up the target. If you are in the wrong place it creates a new target and your cursor goes to its initial point.

I am listening to police radio stations with Diego, right now. We tried to find something in New york, but they were all off, so we tried somethings in Virginia, they were really poring, amount of conversations was not worth to listen. Randomly we tuned to Cleveland police scanner (http://www.cleveland.com/policescanner) Sounds really interesting.

Seems like it is hard to understand what they are talking about. There are bunch of numbers. So, I am searching whatever I hear in this site http://www.apsu.edu/oconnort/polcodes.htm, still I am not really clear what are they talking about.

Right now they gave an address and there is a women insulted by her uncles girlfriend, and I think they gave this number 38(simple assault) 35 (simple battery?)

One officer gives a name; his name is one lebron, like lebron james. hahah

Another example:black male, armed with hand gun, rubbing kids, black hoddy and white nikes.

Another example 50 year old man 5- 7…..

It is 3.51 and I feel like it is time to switch their shifts. Cause they all start with good afternoon, sometimes give coordinates and give their numbers, like david 21(detective 21).

I think, the most interesting thing about police conversations, how could they keep all those numbers and their meanings in their minds? I have been listening to this station almost 2 hours and still it is hard to understand. Also, another interesting thing is, all the abbreviations are online. So, if you want to understand them, you can work on it and figure it out. So, I think they are not secure enough.

This week I have visited Central Park Zoo. I have never been there before and also it has been a long time that I haven’t been to a zoo.

I went there on Sunday. Weather was amazing and park was really crowded. After I found the zoo, I tried to find the ticket booths. They are not as close to zoo as it should be. Also, they need a bigger sign for entrance, it is hard to understand, where is the exit or entrance, or am I going to kids zoo.

Anyways, I found the entry and start touring. I think, greatest thing in Central Park Zoo, everything is located around a circle, so you can’t miss anything. Also they give a map with tickets.

This time, I didn’t notice any toilets, but also I didn’t look for it.

Zoo has different buildings around the circle, for some, you have to get in to buildings. Those buildings has huge wooden doors. Main visitors of zoos are kids and parents with strollers. I think it is hard for them to open those doors. Most of the buildings are hot and smell really bad. Also, there were tons of strollers around, but paths were so narrow, so it was hard to walk around.

There were some areas for benches, so I think they have enough seating.

Also there were some signs that people can physically interact with. I think that was fun, but other than writings on the walls, they need more physical objects, that people can play with. Also, there were a lot of signs, which reminds me what to do all the time.

Also, other then their ticket incomes, zoos are really lucky, because their products in their gift stores are easier to sell then some art museum (they have a lot of toys).

A 8 years old kid

“Ohhh I am going to see lots of animals today. This place seems very crowded, I think I should hold my mothers hand. Wow look at those ants. Hey there is something up there…. I can’t see it. Oh here we are my favorite animal, leopard. Oh where is it? Hmmm I can’t see it. I think he is sleeping. pffff”

A mother with a stroller

“What a nice day. I am sure this place will be crowded. Here we are. Lets start with this room. Ups, what a heavy door.

-Excuse me sir, can you help me?

Ok, lets see, well, its hard to stop and see stuff, all the windows are crowded.

-Oh, sorry.

Can’t they make this roads a little bit wider? Also how am I going to go up to these stairs?”

A 17 years old kid

” Seems like they have penguin feeding in an hour. I shouldn’t miss it. Ok, lets start from here. Wow, somebody can say shut up to these kids! Hmmm, what does this sign says. Oh what is this? “try to find leopard” him what happens if I pull this, ohhh it shows me the leopard! So, nice.”

Firstly, To sport a cause, you have to feel some strong connection to that cause. So, I was looking for something in my country, Turkey. There are many things that I can fight against in there. Secondly, I don’t want to do something nature related, cause I worked in some green supportive groups, including Greenpeace.

This Saturday, after I woke up, I started to read news papers. I was looking at different sources. One of the source says that myspace and last.fm are banned in Turkey. Actually this was not very surprising to me. It started years ago, with wordpress and blogger( I think they are not banned anymore). Then youtube, and google groups flowed. Youtube is still banned for more than a year.

People created different techniques to reach those site. For example, this was 2 years ago, if you set up your blog on your host, people can reach your blog, but if you use wordpress hosting, they can not. Another common thing is people changing their DNS set up. Also there are some web sites that forwards you to banned web site (like ktunnel.com) So, people get used to living with these bans.

There is somethings that bothers me, which are loosing our freedom of speech and freedom of getting information. You may think, by using those solutions that I explained above, everybody can reach to those sites , but there are many people who don’t have any idea about those. Also most of the people won’t say anything to those bans, because there are some important things about people who live there. One of them is they forget so easily, also, people usually don’t try to make changes, they obeys.

So, I feel like I want to work on this cause. First of all, it is related my interests(internet, freedom) and also in an area that I know very well. Also youth in Turkey have been complaining about this, by using their facebook walls, and groups. I think time is also right to work on this cause.

My other idea was doing something for Unesco’s World Heritage center 2010 elections, but I think I’ll keep it for later.

I am also posting some snapshots from the Internet

I have started my visits with Moma. This wasn’t my first visit to there. I entered the building and it was a really wide hall with high ceilings. I got my ticket (student discount- $12) and tried to get in, but they didn’t let me, cause I forgot to drop off my bag. I went to drop it off but this time, I told me they can’t get my laptop. So, I carried it around with me, without a bag.

First thing that I checked was the bathrooms. One of the good things about Moma is, all the bathrooms and fire exits are located almost at the same location, for each floor, and it is not hard to see them (except the ground floor). I tried one of them, and I know this is always a problem of Moma, they stink, also they are not clean enough.

I kept walking around, some of the art pieces were hanging in very high locations. This might be something that they do on purpose, but if I can’t see them that doesn’t make any sense. Also there were some pieces hanging on top of the doors, and of course few people were noticing them.

One good thing about Moma, each section has a concept so you don’t get confused. However, in some rooms there are two doors which goes to different sections, and that confuses me a lot. Deciding which one to choose, sometimes missing some good pieces, never finding your starting point are all problems that are caused by this. Maybe some sort of notifications on the floors or maybe some arrows would help this. Also I always get sleepy in Moma, it might be because of lightning or something else.

I saw a touch screen in one of the exhibitions, which was hiding in one of the corners. I am a little bit obsessed with touch screens. I believe that, they are great source to get lots of information, easily. So, they might use it more effective.

Exhibition on 6th floor was amazing. Architecture and lightning was really great. Also pieces were really interesting. If you haven’t seen it yet, you should check it out.

Also I have visited Andrea Rosen Gallery in Chelsea. I think because of the space constraints, they are not as fun as museums. They have old buildings with high ceilings, but their rooms and layout of buildings are not giving the same feeling. There was a nice exhibition in their 3rd gallery. Artist used lots of cigarettes to create his pieces.

One thing about galleries, I have been to 3 of them today, I realize that people don’t spend that much time in them, and they are usually free.

A teacher with 30 kids in Moma

” Oh god, how am I going to keep all these little monsters together.

-Hey Mark, don’t touch it!

It is going to be a tough day. Hmm lets take them to 2nd floor, there should be some interesting pieces there, then I can take them to 5th floor to show some of the great paintings. I wish there was a guide to help me now. Maybe there are some in some certain hours, why didn’t I search it?

- Kids we are going up to 2nd floor. Please be quite and don’t touch, step on anything. Everybody hold hands of the person next to you.”

Someone who speaks no English

“I heard about this museum a lot. I hope it worth’s. Let’s see how much is the tix. Ohh good, its also written in my language. Hope they can understand body language.

- 2 please?

Yes! I got the tix now. That was easy. There is a sign here, I think I need to drop off my bag. Lets start from the top floor. Oh, look at this painting. This artist is one of my favorite. Let’s take a picture with it. I’ll stand by next to it. I need to find somebody to take our picture.

-Sorry, photo?

Oh, glad that he understood. Oh, that’s a nice pic. I’ll show it to my friends back in home.

This is a very nice piece. But wait a sec. This info is written in English and Spanish. I don’t know both!!!”

Someone with disability

“I am happy that I came with my daughter. She is helping me to ride my chair. Let’s take the elevators. Oh, nice they are big enough. I want to see this special exhibition. Oh, doors are not automated? Really?? Oh, thanks to this young guy, he opened it for us(this part is a real story). Seems really good, but now we need to go out of the room. Why don’t you use automated doors? Oh, this piece seems really good. Is this the same artist with that one. Ohh, it looks nice but I can’t see top of it cause it is hanging at a very high point. I need to go to bathroom. Oh nice, they have spacial bathrooms for us.”

Parts that I dont like:

Positions of IR sensors: you have to lean to activate them. Also, usually users activated left one without knowing it. I am planing to put it higher. So, should get really closer, or use hands.

Shoes: It is so fun to use those shoes, but users don’t trust them. We are thinking of slepers with accelerometers. Still thnking about it…. if you have any idea, let me know.

Circuit board: Board that i made before the show works well, but you shouldn’t move anything. Cause it was a big mess. I made a new board last weekend. It looks better than the old one. Here are some pictures of old and new board:

Soldering bunch of LED’s was very painfull. We used TLC 5490 to multiply the LED’s each TLC can be used with 16 LED’s also you can daisy chain them up to 9 TLC. We used 4 of them, which means 64 LED’s. TLC5490 gives you full control of each LED.

Wiring of LED’s also looks very intense:

Assignment for the class was to creating a random. This needs a lot of brain storming. First question that you need to ask to yourself is what is random? What makes something random? One thing, that drow me crazy was, if we watch a random thing long enough, would it become a cycle? I think random choices for an operation would end at one point and it would start repeating itself.

I started to create a random, which is like a piano falls down to your head on the street (Todd Holoubek explains it this way).

My first prototype was an electromagnet which has iron fillings on it, and a sonar sensor. I was planing to set it up on top of a class entrance, but magnets didn’t worked well. So, I started to work with a servo motor. The algorithm is so simple. Whenever I set the trap up, it creates a random number, then starts to count number of person who enters the room. If the person, who is entering the room is equals to random number, servo works and it poors some confetti on persons head.

Video of the set up

Actually this project is a prototype for a bigger project. Assignment for living art class was, making a finite state machine. This was a greate chance for me to start working on my prototype for a bendir interface.

What is Bendir?

Bendir is a very old drum, that usually used in Turkish musics . It is a big circle and mostly you play it with your hands or fingers, not with sticks.

wikipedia link for bendir, a video for bendir(guy talks in Turkish and teaches how to make it, but he also plays the instrument. You should watch it)

This was a very common instrument, but now a days people are forgetting those kind of analog instruments, cause using digital sounds makes producing music easier.

Once, I was talking to my father about my idea, and he asked me, how do I know this instrument? He saw it, first time, two years ago. I told him that, I was playing bendir in my band years ago. This was a big surprise for him.

My idea is, I really like sound of this instrument, it is meditating, by itself or with other instruments. I don’t want it to get lost in our digital culture.

So, I started to build an analog interface for bendir, which is controled by a software. I used solenoids and arduino for my physical interface. Basicly my starting point was, using a switch and something like a drum kick to play a bendir. So, I build my circuit and a wood kick with a solenoid.

As I said before, this is a prototype for the real project. Real one will be controlled by a software and kick are going to be different. I have to try it with different materials to get closer to sound made by finger.

My final idea is implementing neural networks on gesture recognition. I have started with one of Shiffman’s code. It is recognising ’0′ and ’1′, by using pixel data. So, I started with using this code and one finger. It was workin very well for ’0′ and ’1′ cause they are very different from each other, but using pixel data is not a very good way for similar objects. I found a Flash app at bytearray.org. They divided the mouse recordings in to arrays and give each direction different number(there is 8 direction). So, I got the mouse inputs which are not equal to previous mouse location and put 20 sample data in to database. Also I used – mouse vector length/ summation of all distance- for each sample in my database. That makes scalling easier. Actually, if we think about a triangle with sides 3,4,5 cm, what I am recording for each side is (according to directions) 3/12,4/12,5/12, and that makes scalling easier.

I am planing to make some more imporevements to this project and create a database which grove ups in it. My idea is letting people in ITP to correlate some gestures with their drawings. I have to work on this ide more during the summer.

http:// seedmagazine.com/content/article/the_living_robot/

Computer vision has been using in different areas for years. I think the reason behind making researches about computer vision is, most important and effective sense is vision. We mostly learn thing by seeing. I have been to an experiment 3 years ago. We were in a room and having a dinner with around 50 people. Suddenly they turned the lights off for 5 min. We tried to eat our food without seeing it. You can smell it, you can touch it, you can hear the people around you, but you can’t see it. It was every interesting to see that vision is very important for us.

I think one of the important areas for the computer vision is, industrial production. In factories people using CV, for automated systems or to see very small details.

Another area is health services. Now a day, doctors are using cameras and robotic arms in surgeries.

I think in the near future, we are going to start producing smart machines with cameras.

There is an article on www.seedmagazine.com about a new robot that have ability to learn things, and at the end it dies because it learns more that its capacity. I am sure when the time comes, people will start to develop algorithms for those robots that they can start learning the things that they see by their eyes (cameras). In this example, they are using sonar sensor, which gives range values. For Example, hat if we use a camera with a sonar sensor. So we can detect objects (maybe with their shapes), which are close to our robot. Than by using an algorithm like color tracking we can understand the objects color. This process is very similar to a babies learning process. We can keep those data in memory and by using an algorithm (something like neural networks) we can start learning.

For example, our robot sees a chair (a chair like black one in class) and keeps its shape in its mind, than checks for the color. Then whenever it sees a chair with similar shape and color, it can think that it is in ITP.

So, maybe they can start watching our moves and start to make correlations between reason and result. That means we are creating the human again and all those sci-fi movies would become real.

1) My family and friends live in Turkey. So, I share photos to keep them updated.

2) Important and interesting moments

3) If there is more than one person in a photo, I share it and they can keep a copy of it.

an example

By uploading an image, we can give locations, time. Also if we can notice the persons that we want to share the picture, via e-mail or mms(that’s easier), that would be really great. Like the one that I posted in example link, I can send this image to a hospital or a doctor and ask for help. It could be something like a health server(ex:helpme@help.com), which you can ask for help.

We build the resting piece. Also put some additional soft silicons on it to make Wilson rest. Also, we made the mouse pad as wider as he want to. However, he told us that he is not comfortable with that. So, we gave up the idea and started something new.

In one of our classes, one of the guests, told us that we should use a track ball to help him. We bought a track ball, and let him try. He was very comfortable with it, and he seemed he really liked it. I was wondering that, using cliscks and the mouse at the same time might not be easy for him, but he managed that. Then everything become simpler for us. We just need to build up a table for the track ball.

First idea that came to our mind, was to use some foam blocks to build up a cube and put the track ball on top of it. Because foam blocks are strong and they are not heavy. We build a cube and give it to him. We were planning to cut some pieces to make it stable on his table. We asked him to do that, but he didn’t want it. He is nearly all the time ok with everything.

After we left the cube and track ball in his place, next thing was to buy a FLStudio software and teach him how to use it. It is very easy to learn it. I just showed him twice and he learned it. Then I get a myspace page for him to upload his beats. Address: www.mypace.com/wilsonlenny .

As a final step, we made a documentry video with him and his mother Anna. They were very exited about that and it is a good documentation for the class. We made it, because we think that whole proceses of this class more important than the final product. I am going to upload the video later.

Also we are in to ITP Winter Show 2008 with this video. Also, Lenny will be at ITP at 12/16/2008 to talk about it and see the floor. This is very exiting.

For my final project, I have 3 different ideas in my mind.
1) I can take data from last.fm and visualize user habits, but this seems very cliche.
2) I can, work on taste assignment. I can use foods and their tastes as my database. User can give his favorite food as an input, and application can recommend a different foods, which are similar to this. This is very similar to our first idea about wine(recommending food according to choice of wine)
3) I can visualize foods and their adjectives in terms of the countries that they belong to. So, we can see similar patterns or similar tastes between different countries. I think, I will work on this one.

Here is some visualizing samples that I found online. I think, I will work on something like those ones.

When I asked one of my teacher, how can I have visual experience and how can I improve myself, his answer was; “choose some examples, and influence from them”. It seams like influencing is best way to develope something. You can not do the exactly same thing when you are influencing from something, but it will be something like your reaction to that piece.

I listen to music, nearly 5-6 hours in a day. I listen many different genrees. I can say, I have quite good experience in this. When you start to listen too much, and different genrees, you will understand, many songs influenced by different songs. I guess the reason is, we have limited amount of resource in our hands (until someone comes with a new idea), so we are using same things in different variations, but at the same time, we are creating our way of artistic communication.

Before reading this book, we should think about an endless loop: “what is art? what makes something art?”

Those questions are very important to me now a days. According to the book it seems like “electric” has changed the art.

Technological developments and inventions changed the art “concept”. Especially in last 100 years, people started to think, imagine differently. Of course, many things have buildup during this period and which are really art( according to my ideas ), but there are many things which means nothing to me.

Now a days people, understand the importance of medium, and I guess that makes their life easier. People, who are lazy are using the concept or medium as to cover up their meaningles “art” pieces.

For me, something beautiful, something disgusting, something scary can be art, but it has to give me its message by just looking at it or listening to it ( I am not talking about literature, it is completely different story ), but those lazy or incapable people, that I mentioned before, that can not transfer their message, are using the word “concept” as to cover their “things”. So, during the contemporary art period, people start using medium of literal in their visual art pieces. Well, if they can give their message, literally stronger then visual, why those people use visuals as their art? Now a days, people doing “something” and call it art. However if anybody asks them “what makes this art?”, their only answer is “because I feel like this is art”.

Changing how you transfer medium of art might be good or bad; “it is the way they are used that determines their value*”.

I am a little bit late to document this class. Firstly, during the first weeks, we decide our project groups and our projects. I am working with Micaela and Wilson. Wilson has muscular dystrophy, he is 19. He likes hip-hop and wants to produce some hip-hop beats.
This presentation is for our first ideas: presentation

After talking with him, we figure out that, we don,t have to build a high-tech thing for him. Also, he is happy with his mouse, we don’t need to keep it away from him.

So, we came up with the idea of building a resting piece for him. This piece is going to help him to rest while he is working on his beats. We might at a tapping function to his instead clicking.

Assignment 1

I am planing to build an image, which is like a root of a tree. For this, I will put the top of the tree on the screen and I am planing to use some colored balls which will travel according to the data, and will draw the roots of the tree. I am planing to make it in 3D and have an ability to zoom in & out. I am planing to make my background black.

I think, I didn’t get what do you mean by saying larva, but I figure out (with the help of paper) it might be something like a real larva( I was expecting something different). I choose a hand drawing of it:

Assignment 2

http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/interactive/timelines/british/index.shtml

This site is about British history. They basically builded a time line and dive it according to time, each color gives the different time. When you click on a time, you can zoom in find informations about that time.

http://www.noiseawareness.blogspot.com/
Also, this project is showing the different noise levels in different cities on billboards.

http://www.plummerfernandez.com/
“Sound/Chair begins as a sound that is precisely crafted to form the shape of a chair when visualized as a 3-dimensional object using a volume, time, frequency plot. The chair is an exact replica of the soundwave graph. The result is a product with dual existence as both a sound and chair, and a new approach to designing products.”

What I did was, I took a snapshot from a glass of bubble. Then, make edge detection on bubbles, and I got the edges of the bubbles. Afterwards, I make blob detection and get the blobs, I was planing to make something like a histogram, so we can see which side is whiter(image is black&white) so we can understand, what part has the most bubbles.

“In all the arts there is a physical component which can no longer be considered or treated as it used to be, which cannot remain unaffected by our modern knowledge and power. For the last twenty years neither matter nor space nor time has been what it was from time immemorial. We must expect great innovations to transform the entire technique of the arts, thereby affecting artistic invention itself and perhaps even bringing about an amazing change in our very notion of art.” Paul Valéry, Pièces sur L’Art

Article starts with this quote. It makes a lot sense to me. What we are trying to do this days is, trying to create a new way to art. Most of us has some ideas about combining the arts with technology. Well, combining the arts with technology is not a new idea. For example, after invention of printers they used that technology in writing and mass production of new books. By saying technology, I want to mention that, technology with computers and sensors. Those new tech. makes computers(dumb machines) very close to humans(by giving them ability to sensing). So, we are getting ready to see new formations in arts.

Also according to writer, people who witnesses in something will become an expert on that subject. Also, he mentioned that, now a days people become more involved in printed news issues like news paper. I tried to mention to paragraphs quickly. The reason behind is, everyday we are witnessing many things. At the same times, we have our blogs, accounts on web sites(such as news papers), video sharing accounts, and they are all global resources. Maybe many people haven’t realized that but we are building a new society, which is more global, aware, and open to sharing. I am really wondering about the future. I believe that globalization on the internet will effect nationalities, economies and politics in the near future. Also, I am wondering that, what is going to happen in the future, if we keep sharing everything in our life, on social sources like Facebook.

Also, I am surprised that, while he was comparing cameraman and painter, he says, painters have some distance from reality but cameramen are penetrates directly in to realty. Well, it might seem like, painters draws the objects in a way they see them, but cameramen can show the realties in an angle they see them. I mean, they can hide realities or they can show good sides of the truth by their cameras, without event touching the bad sides. For example; a cameraman can show that their country in a good shape during a war by showing their guns, tanks and some soldiers who are holding a gun in their hands happy about the situation, but other one can show like they are loosing a war by showing death bodies etc.

This week I have used microscope to figure out what should I do as a second project. Also, I have searched through the internet. There should be many different thinks to visualize, but the only thing that comes to my mind is edge detection. I am planing to use foam as my object to visualize, and try to make edge detection on each blob and connect their center of gravity. Maybe connection that I will make between them tells something, like distance. Afterwards, maybe I can count number of blobs in a sample foam etc.

1) Approximately how many of your waking hours each day are you
listening to music? Of that number of hours, how much of the time is
music you’ve chosen to listen to, and how much time is it music from
speakers in a store, cafe, friend’s room, etc.?

I listen to music nearly 4 or more hours in a day. Mostly I use headphones, but at home I listen to music from speakers. Mostly I have my own playlist, Sometimes I use last.fm at home I listen to radio. Mostly I listen at home, on the subway, at the lounge with my headphones. Sometimes I listen to music at cafes but not much.

2) How much time each day do you spend listening specificially to a
personal sound device of one sort or another? And how much of the time
when you’ve got headphones on or earbuds in are you using the music to
block out other sound like subways or something else you find
annoying?

When I am walking in the street in the morning or at night, at the floor.

3) How much time a week do you spend listening to music, either
through a personal sound device or at a club/concert venue, which you
feel could be loud enough to cause damage to your hearing?

at least 2 night in a week.

4) How often in an average day, or week, do you spend actively seeking
out silence? And how successful are you at finding a silent space if
you do go looking for one?

Usually I don’t look for silence. However if the sound is something like a construction sound I would look for slience but it is not that often.

5) Do you think that the balance between sound and silence in your
world is where you’d like it to be? Or would you like to change it
toward more or less sound?

It is ok for me now.

6) What’s the most powerful experience of silence you’ve ever had?

When I was in sound recording studio in my college, but you can even hear the sound of the fans.

During installation process, my basic problem was finding right FTP program to upload my files. I have tried CuteFTP and FUGU. I think, I will go on with FUGU. It seems easier and it is free. However, I could not delete my folders by using FUGU.

After installation, I found a theme which is called black and red theme.

I started to edit its CSS folder. First problem that I have faced was, I forgot to change port number to 777 which lets to make changes on a file. Afterwards, I have changed the header, menu bar, bullets and some colors on site. Now, you see the page that I have edited.

NYC Waterfalls

NYC Waterfalls are made by Olafur Eliasson. The ide behind the project was, we see the river in one dimention, what happens if we change it? I watched some videos of it. They said technologicaly it is to hard to design it, because they need to design a pool which keeps the water in it clean, and huge plumbers for the waterfall.

According to my ideas, I can’t see those waterfalls as an art piece. Maybe that is because I have an engineering background, but it seems like they don’t have any function to me. When I first heard about them, I thought they were something which has interaction with anything around them or they might have lights which make them beautiful, but I was wrong. To me, they look like some steal constructions, and they drop some water over constructions with the help of plumbers. I guess this is more likely something for the city kids who never saw a naturel waterfall.

There are lots of naturel waterfalls around world and I believe that they much beatiful. They are more beautiful because they are natural. I am a big fan of technological developments and I think there has to be technolgical and artistic projects which are affected by nature, but this one is exactly the same. So I want to talk about my day, and my experinces.

When I come to the Brooklyn Bridge there were lots of interesting things except waterfalls. There was an interesting market place. I think they were selling realy delicious things. I walked in to the park and it was crowded. I walked a little and see yeloow canoes in the river. They sem so interesting to me. I wonders how do they pass the river, because at the same time there are some boat around, which makes traveling in the river dangerous to them. Then I saw a waterfall under the Brooklyn Bridge. I checked if there is anything interesting for me, because I am a mediterranean and I have a different waterfall image in my mind. By the way, I really don’t understand why people call it a art piece? I took some photos and walk back to the subway. Then I realize another waterfall on the otherside. Well, the one which is under the Brooklyn Bridge seems more interesting then this one, because it was under the bridge and maybe I can fit it in to a concept.

I have still questions in my mind like, why did they do this, why this is an art piece etc. If I see it in the evening with some lights, it might seem interesting to me. However, now it seems like plumbing some water.

Literacy and Orality

First of all I want to say that, Walter Ong’s Orality and Literacy book is a bit boring. I heard many complaints about the book from my friends. I think, it is really easy to fall a sleep while reading it. I spend someday on it but I cannot finish the 4 chapters. Also it is so hard for me to understand everything in the book.

<img src="jpg/mustafasleep.JPG"height="362" width="456" border=1 />

Writer starts with describing the differences between oral literature and written literature. According to writer oral literature created before written literature. Written literature is visualization of the oral literature. He says ” Writing makes ‘ words appear similar to things because we think of words as the visible marks signaling words to decoders: we can see and touch such inscribed ‘ words’ in texts and books. This idea is really explains it perfectly. Also, my peronal idea is, language is something personal, because when we say something or write something we visualize it in our brains and try to explain it to others. This may create different figures in everyones mind.

Also Ong talked about ancient cultures, which has effects on development of writing. He talked about Greek alphabet and Homeric poems. He says Homeric poems are mix of early and late Aeolic and Ionic written literature and it developed in several years, which shows development of language. Also he says that, if something is written it won’t be lost.

According to Ong, oral culture is not just words and sounds, also it includes thoughts. Also giving references or finding a reliable base to ideas is easier in written literacy. This is important because we can see its effects on mostly development of laws. Before the written law judges can penalize people according to what they have in their hands. So, it can make differences in different parts of the country. However after written literacy, they had examples in judge’s hands, which have limitation effect on them.

As I said it is very hard for me to read this book and understand the concepts, because I cannot get into the subject. Also he makes lots of citation, which are really iritates me. I will update my page when ever I understand more or read more chapters…
